Light & Beauty – book reviews, contest, Brother Mickey appearance!

Saved by Beauty and This Little Light – the November book review and book giveaway series continues!

I’ll begin this review of two books with the end in mind… If you are making a list so that someone may check it twice, I suggest that you ask for both books. Seriously – ask for both books! You will not regret this, even if it feels a bit over the top. Let me tell you why…

There will be pure joy upon giving and receiving such things, there will be no standing in long lines to return things that you don’t want, and no suffering the potential shame of re-gifting the wrong gift to the wrong person. Go ahead, attach this review to your wish list! And if you are looking for gifts for someone else, try using this as your shopping list. (Book giveway contest info at the end of the post, along with info about upcoming appearances by Brother Mickey!)

Saturday Bonus – Spring Enrichment featuring James Martin, SJ

Each year our diocese hosts a large scale catechetical event, Spring Enrichment. This year’s theme is the Heart of Christ. I remember the first time that I attended Spring Enrichment in 2008, I could not believe it! There was (and is!) such a wide breadth of courses, seminars and speakers to choose from. Since that time, I have not missed a year, and I have been privileged to be an instructor, as well as involved with the planning of events.

This year we have a very major keynote speaker, Father James Martin, SJ. Father Jim has written numerous books, is often seen on television, has a pronounced presence on the internet and is also an editor at America magazine, the national Catholic weekly. A great list of Martin’s books has been compiled by my friend, Brother Daniel Horan, OFM and can be seen here.

Fr. Jim and I spent a little time on the phone recently and I wrote this column about him in today’s Times Union. (No subscription or registration required.) If you attend the evening event, you can support a wonderful charity, The Sister Maureen Joyce Center, which will benefit from ticket sales proceeds.

Amazing God – A Visit With St. Paul – March 26, 2012

On March 26, 2012 we will hold a very special Amazing God event here at Immaculate Conception! We are blessed to welcome Glenn K. Smith and his outstanding performance of A Visit with St. Paul.  The program will begin at 7pm in the Church, all are welcome.

I always wonder what it would be like to have actually met Jesus or the Apostles; it is so hard to imagine, but I do think about it!  While we can never know what that would have been like, Smith offers us a glimpse of what things might have been. We will be transported to 65 A.D. and we will meet the great saint in his Roman captivity.

Please join us – and do bring friends and tell others!  This will be a great Lenten evening and an opportunity to grow in our faith!
